Samsung Ending My Knox Support, As Secure Folder Takes Over

According to emails reportedly being sent out to relevant users, ‘My Knox’ is now in in the process of being discontinued by Samsung. The details on this are still quite light and so there is no firm confirmation on when the My Knox application will completely cease operations, with further information on this expected to be announced soon. In the meantime, it is understood that current users will be able to continue using the app, although Samsung has reportedly confirmed that it “will not be actively maintaining the service or adding new features.” Likewise, it also seems to have been confirmed that My Knox will no longer be present on future Samsung devices.

While this will affect current My Knox users, this is unlikely to be a feature that will be greatly missed in the grand scheme of things, as Samsung has since made available a new feature, Secure Folder. The latter first debuted on the Galaxy Note 7, and has since become available on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, as well as rolling out to the likes of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, and has also generally become available to most, if not all, Samsung devices – running on Android 7.0 (Nougat).

While the two are slightly different features, their underlying principle is the same – to protect Samsung device owner’s data. This is achieved by both options creating what is essentially a separate space to store data that the user wants to protect. This data is then less accessible compared to the more public-located data on a device. In some respects, creating two separate device storage spaces. Of course, with one being newer than the other, it makes sense for Samsung to want to migrate users over from the older feature, to the newer one. Which according to the information coming through, is exactly what is now happening with current My Knox users being asked to make use of Secure Folder instead. To help with the transition, it also seems as though Samsung has simplified the process of migrating any data over from My Knox to Secure Folder. All that is required is for the user to backup the data in My Knox, and restore it again in Secure Folder.
